Worcester News Placement: Day 4

After a much less dramatic morning today (the most exciting thing was a bit of traffic on the ole M5) I headed into the office for my penultimate day.

This morning saw me writing a bit more ‘wrap’ for the paper from press releases and doing a few colour pieces.

One lady I spoke to on the phone was super chatty and I even got a second story out of her! Go me and my new journalistic skills…

And this afternoon myself, Liz one of the reporters and the photographer headed out of the office to the sunny streets of Worcester.

I was set with the task of doing a vox-pop on the ‘love-em-or-hate-em’ vuvzelas from the World Cup.

So armed without sunnies, a camera and one of the plastic horns – of the Sainsburys variety if your interested. £2, bargin! – we set about asking the Worcester folk what they thought.

My highlight was 3-year-old Justin who posed with the vuvuzela like a pro and was honestly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!

Back in the office, I added my interviews to my article and voila! It was ready for subbing!

My week has been super eventful so I’m looking forward to the fun things planned for me tomorow!

Worcester News Placement: Day 3

I was looking forward to my third day on placement – I was on the promise of a McDonalds lunch from my cousin so had planned my day around that.

Unfortunately my day went ‘tits up’ from the beginning…

Firstly, I burnt my finger on my GHD’s.

Yes, it’s hardly the end of the world but it didn’t half hurt and now I’m sporting a rather fetching blister on my knuckle!

And things went from bad to worse…

While making my way to the M5 some ….. idiot (not my first choice of word may I add) felt he was above the law and drove at my car way over the speed limit and smashed the glass in my wing mirror clean out of the holder thingy. He then proceeded to carry on his merry way without a second thought.

So I went to Halfords to get it fixed and, after waiting 40 mins for it to open, was told,

“You need to take the glass out love…but not with your hands, its glass. Get a screwdriver”

Oh, I’m sorry, I thought I paid my £1.99 fitting charge for you to fit it…Not for you to stand there and tell me what I should do!

They say bad things come in three’s though…

So 2 hours late I made it to the office!

My day consisted of attending the grand opening of a mural painted by some school kids, and doing a few telephone intereviews.

I spoke to Sainsburys about their sales of the beloved/dreaded vuvuzela World Cup horns, and a proud dad whose son had done a 20 mile sponsored cycle.

Lets home tomorrow is more successful!

Worcester News Placement: Day 2

Image from BBC Hereford & Worcester

Day 2 of my second placement saw me attend some of the trails being held at Worcester Magistrates Court.

I attended the courts shadowing one of the papers reporters on the hunt for the details behind a couple of cases.

We were there from 10am-1pm and sat in on a few court cases, but I was told it was a pretty boring day as far as the trails went.

If I’m honest, I spent most of the morning in awe of his shorthand, I desperatly want to learn so if anyone knows somewhere in the Birmingham/West Midlands area drop me a message!

After my lunch break  – and a spot of retail therapy – I headed back to the office to write up a few page-fillers from some press releases.

After my adventure this morning I headed to my boyfriends house to relax, and show off a little bit that my uni course is better than his!

I wonder what tomorrow will hold!

Worcester News Placement: Day 1

Today I started my second work placement, at The Worcester News.

After my success at The Post & Mail – I had a page lead printed don’cha know ;) – I was excited to start my second stint as a journalist.

The first difference I noticed was the atmosphere – The Post & Mail was very bustley and modern, where as the Worcester News seems more ‘old wordly’ and ‘hyper local’ (not a bad thing though!)

I was thrown straight in at the deep end with a set of telephone interviews to do and then spent the time writing up the stories. I also wrote a few bits and bobs from press releases.

Tomorrow I’m going to court with another reporter and am half hoping for a juicy trial and half hoping it’s not!

But that, is for tomorrows blog post….

Birmingham Post & Mail Placement: Day 5

As my last day at The Birmingham Post and Mail draws to a close I thought I would post up my last update of what I’ve been up to…

This morning I finished off writing and researching my feature for The Post on unusual animals living in Birmingham and then set about contacting people for quotes and such!

I spoke to Louise Pedersen from the Midlands RSPB and found out lots of interesting facts about the birds living in the cities buildings.

She was really helpful and with all her knowledge I have finished my 600 word feature and am just checking it before I pass it on for checking.

One thing I have discovered this week is ask me to write a 3,500 word research report and ill do it in 4,500 no problem but tell me to write 150 words from a press release and I’m stumped! Lol

I have solved this issue now though, and am just waiting for a few more bits and pieces to be sent my ay to bash out!

Overall I have really enjoyed this week, I’ve experience a load more than I thought I would and am really grateful to everyone that has helped me out over the week!

Its back to being a student on Monday though, with deadlines looming and a Flash app nowhere near completion I’ll have to stop playing journalist! :(

Birmingham Post & Mail Placement: Day 4

So now, the end is near…..

As I approach my last day on placement and The Birmingham Post and Mail, I really think I’m going to miss doing this everyday.

Today I went out on location shadowing Paul Bradley to film and take photos at a PR event for a fun run in Lichfield in July.

While we were there, the Mail camera man – who had no idea who I was – thrust the camera in my face and began interviewing me and Sam, the other person on placement, about why were were there….awkwaaard!

I would of at least liked some warning so I could of brushed my hair and not squinted at him like a gorm….

The rest of the afternoon I spent in the office writing up a 600 word page feature for the Post on unsual animals living in the city. This is still a work in progress and I shall be making some phone calls tomorrow!

Finally, we spent some time with Paul while he filmed the Mails ‘Blues View’ video for the web, and watched him edit for a while.

So overall, it has been my buissiest day and I’m looking forward to a lie-down but I’m having the best time!

Roll on my placement with the Worcester News in a fortnight!

Birmingham Post & Mail Placement: Day 3

I am half way through my placement at the Post & Mail and am really getting into the swing of it now.

It was all a bit alien to me at first, as I’d never worked anywhere like it, but after three days I can safely say I want to play journalist for real :)

Today saw me come up with, research and write a page lead for The Mail.

I had to pick a story that interested me and run with it – so I picked the re-opening of the Camp Hill train line and the Stirchley, Kings Heath and Moseley stations.

As nothing had been said about it for a while, I was interested to know what was happening so I set about phoning as many people as I could think of.

My first port-of-call, Network Rail, drew a blank as the appropriate person was out of office but I eventually got a quote from Centro about what was happening.

I then spoke to BirminghamRecycled‘s friends, Birmingham FOE who gave me a quote and a local campaigner!

I was pleased with my overall article – it might not have been that new to anyone but I’d got the story and done the interviews by myself!

I also wrote some more shorts for the Mail.

On to day 4…..

Birmingham Post & Mail Placement: Day 2

Now if you know me, you’ll know I’m vile in the mornings; so my 7am wake up call didn’t go down to well today!

However once I was awake I headed, once again to Fort Dunlop for my placement at The Post and Mail.

Today saw us attened the inquest into a Birmingham mans death. Having never been to anything like it before I was unsure of what to expect.

But aside from all the technical jargon and my hand not writing fast enough (note to self: must learn shorthand!!) I quite enjoyed the morning - not in a morbid way, it was just interesting to do something other than write what my lecturer tells me to/what I’m used to!

This afternoon saw me writting a few drafts of my article on the inquest. At first it was hard to shake the idea of just writing the facts robotically but by the end - after some advice from John Marsden – I’m pretty pleased with the end result!

I’m definalty improving the way I write here, just need to knuckle down and get writing my dissertation proposal….YAAAAWN!

Birmingham Post & Mail Placement: Day 1

This morning was my first day as a proper journalist, as I started my placement with the Birmingham Post and Mail.

After the standard ‘health and saftey’ talk and a wander round the stuffy office – the air con is currently broken and unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ll know it’s about 1000 degrees outside – I was ‘thrown in at the deep end’

I’ve not been on placement at a newspaper before – and my experience in a PR firm sucked – so, armed only with my skills from uni, I have been hard at work all day.

My desk is opposite a mahoooosive window and right about now I have sun envy, I want to sit outside and tan! But since 10am this morn I have been emailing and writing away.

My first story turned out to be a flop after the couple in question changed their minds about being interviewed but since then I’ve written at least six 100-250 word ‘tops’ and ‘shorts’ for the website  – sounds like what you should be wearing in this weather, no?!

Myself and the other person on placement get to clock off early today but from tomorrow I am a 9-5 working girlie!

I shall keep you posted on my experiences :D
